Book Review: Porter the Hoarder and the Ransacked Room

I am constantly searching the internet for children’s books that I can use to help my younger patients overcome their anxiety and OCD. My most recent search lead me to this book. It initially caught my eye because it’s from the producer of Napoleon Dynamite, Sean Covel, and I wondered if it would be useful for my young hoarders. I’m happy to report it’s great! As the title implies, Porter is a sassy little girl who also happens to be a hoarder. The reader helps Porter look through piles of stuff to find her collections (like chewed-up bubble gum and lightning-fried lizards) and make decisions on what to get rid of. But beware, she’s not very happy about having to throw her collections away! The book is fun and laugh-out-loud funny for all ages (yes, even adults) and can be a helpful tool when motivating kids who hoard to work on throwing away their collections. Porter’s reactions can also be a great way to talk about and validate a child’s experience & emotions when faced with having to throw away their treasures.

I highly recommend this book for any child, but especially for children who hoard. Luckily, this is just the first book of the series and I look forward to following Porter’s adventures and how she will manage her hoarding.
